Renowned universities

Zürich is the Swiss centre for universities. The University of Zürich is the largest in Switzerland with 25,000 students, seven faculties and around 150 institutes.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) has a great reputation the world over and is the best institute of further education in continental Europe. It offers courses in mathematics, natural sciences, architecture, engineering and IT.

The Zürcher Fachhochschule (ZFH), which puts the emphasis very much on acquiring practical skills, is made up of the Zürich Pedagogical University (PHZH), the Zürich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), the Zürich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and the Zürich University of Applied Sciences in Business Administration (HWZ). It has over 14,000 students who can choose between full-time and sandwich Bachelor's and Master's courses in various studies.

A place for research

Cutting-edge research in Zürich is not just carried out at the ETH, the University or the technical colleges – the whole economic area is like a densely populated yet organically developed science park. Private research centres such as the multiple Nobel Prize-winning IBM Research Laboratory, Google's European research centre and the Disney Research Lab have also made their home in Zürich

Professional apprenticeship system

Vocational training
Most young people complete level I of secondary education and then go on to do an apprenticeship which lasts for two to four years. The basic two-year training course leads to a federal vocational attestation, while the three-to-four year course leads to a federal certificate of competency.

Particularly gifted students can fulfil the entry criteria for the Fachhochschule at a vocational school (Berufsmaturitätsschule).
